Pongal is a four-day-long harvest festival celebrated in Tamil Nadu, a southern state of India from 14th -17th of January. The word ‘pongal’ in Tamil literally translates to “to boil. People boil freshly-harvested rice, along with milk and jaggery in a new clay pot. They let the boiling concoction spill over, because it is considered to be auspicious and represents abundance.
