Irish Culture – St Patrick’s Day
Happy St. Patrick’s Day! St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17th. St. Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland and used the shamrock to explain the trinity to Irish people. According to legend St. Patrick drove snakes out of Ireland. Traditionally St. Patrick’s Day was a day of religious observance in Ireland. However Irish Americans decided to host huge parties on the 17th March to celebrate their heritage and invented many St. Patrick’s Day traditions. Today Irish people and the Irish diaspora celebrate St. Patrick’s day by wearing shamrocks, wearing green, painting their faces green, participating or watching parades with marching bands, Irish dancing and music. America hosts the biggest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations with extravagant parades in New York, Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia.
