Chinese Culture – Harbin International Ice & Snow Festival
Located in the northeast of China, Harbin International Ice and Snow festival is the largest ice and snow festival in the world. The opening ceremony is held on January 5 and the festival lasts for more than a month. To build the frozen city, tens of thousands of ice blocks were carved out of the frozen river Songhua in Harbin. These ice blocks are then used to chisel cartoon sculptures, build life-sized castles, pagodas, bridges and restaurants. The elaborate ice structures are lit up at night in a splendid array of colours. The festival also includes activities like sledging, ice hockey, ice football, speed skating and Alpine skiing competitions.
