English Culture – St. George’s Day

Happy St. Georges day! St. George is the patron saint of England. St. George was a roman solider who according to legend killed a dragon and rescued a maiden. St. Georges Day falls on April 23rd each year, the date St. George died. He was martyred for his religious beliefs. The English flag is the St. George’s cross, a red cross on a white background. The English celebrate St George’s Day by flying the St. Georges flag, eating tradition English food, painting their faces in the St. Georges colours and attending parties. The English Heritage and National Trust often promote St George’s Day celebrations in many of their sites around the UK.
