Christmas in Britain – Plum Pudding

Plum pudding is a festive pudding traditionally served as part of the Christmas dinner in Britain. It is a rich steamed suet pudding made of mixed dried fruit, candied fruit peel, nuts, spices and brandy. Once served, tradition dictates it should be flambéed. Traditionally families would make their Christmas puddings together and stir in a sixpence for luck, five weeks before Christmas on Stir-up Sunday. Tradition dictates the coin will bring good fortune in the year ahead for the person who finds it in their piece of the pudding on Christmas Day. The UK’s Royal Mint still makes special ‘Christmas Silver Sixpence’ coins every year for the use in Christmas plum puddings.
