Scottish Culture – St. Andrews Day

St Andrew is Scotland’s patron saint and St Andrew’s Day takes place on November 30th. Scotland’s national flag is the saltire of St Andrew. St Andrew has been celebrated in Scotland for over a thousand years, however St Andrew was declared the country’s patron saint in 1320 at the Declaration of Arbroath, which celebrated Scottish independence. The tradition of celebrating St Andrews Day on 30th of November was started by Scottish immigrants in America who established St Andrew’s Society of Charleston’ in South Carolina, in 1729. Similar Scottish societies have since been established all over America and the rest of the world. Today St Andrews day is celebrated worldwide and is marked by traditional Scottish dancing, music as well as Scottish food and drink. Happy St. Andrews Day from Culture Buff
