American Culture – Columbus Day

Columbus Day is a federal holiday commemorating the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492. For many, the holiday is a way of both honoring Columbus’ achievements and celebrating Italian-American heritage. Columbus Day is celebrated on October 11th this year however it is not observed in every state. At least 14 states and more than 130 local governments have chosen to not celebrate Columbus day or replace it with another holiday called Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
